Technical Communication Needs Assessment: Pixlr
Statement of Purpose: This communication is to inform employees what Pixlr is, instruct them how to use it when editing images for health brochures, and persuade them that it is easy to use and produces better quality photos and images.
Business Need: Every few years new student photographs are taken, and images created, that are meant to be used in health media around campus, such as posters, brochures, and e-magazines.
Audience: The audience is the Health Promotion & Preventive Services department at Campus Health who is responsible for health media and marketing. This audience includes students, mid-level professionals and supervisors, and consists of 15-20 people. There are no employees with any background in marketing and design and they have not been trained in any type of image editing software.
Situation: Employees will receive this communication as a written report, and it will also be available as a reference online via email. It will be distributed in a single location, and in English only. There are no other physical limitations or special needs at this time. The audience will be multitasking, as they will be reading the instructions on this document as they have the pixlr application open and work in progress.
Goals of the communication: The goals of this communication are for the employees to understand basic processes in pixlr, such as cropping a photo, editing brightness and enhancing an image. Employees will be comfortable making changes to images and in using them for public material.
Requirements: Requirements for this communication include downloading the Autodesk Pixlr application for either Windows or Mac. This is a free application. Web-based mediums and materials will be available; however, employees are encouraged to print out the instructions and accompanying documents if they prefer to have hard copies to reference while using Pixlr on their computer.
Scope: A collection of documents will be most beneficial for distribution, as there will be a few different sets of instructions to follow, depending on the task at hand. These will all be compiled together for reference.
Topic: List of topics to be covered include description of pixlr, what it is and why it is used, how to upload an image, how to use the brightness feature, adjusting light and dark, how to crop a photo and add a border, and how to change colors.
Audience prerequisites: Basic knowledge of using a computer is required; however, no knowledge of the pixlr application is necessary.
Expertise of writers/designers: Christi Castillo, Graphic Designer, of Tiger Productions will design and develop this communication.
