DD2HW1 Chapters 6 & 20

Chapter 20

What to Do Before Jacking Up Your Car to Change a Flat Tire

Follow these basic procedures, then jack your car up.

1. Position your car on as firm and level a surface as is available.

2. Turn the engine off and set the parking break.

3. Either place the automatic transmission shift lever in “park,”
or the manual transmission lever in “reverse.”

4. Place a piece of wood beneath the wheel diagonally opposite the one to be removed. This will prevent the wheel from rolling.

5. Remove the spare wheel, jack, and lug wrench from the luggage compartment.

Chapter 6

Improvements in Content, Arrangement and Style.

Many improvements are noted when comparing Glenn’s draft to his final.
  • The memo style used in the final makes the document look formal and appropriate for the Assistant Vice President and the Vice President. It includes a brief introduction, body of strengths and recommendations, and a concise closing statement.
  • He uses bold font for topic headings and bulleted lists for Strengths and Suggested Changes, which help the reader to understand the main points without having to search throughout the entire document.
  • In Glenn’s first draft, each paragraph starts with a sentence stating what “should” be done. In his final draft, he made improvements by stating a clear suggestion, then a justification.  This keeps readers from becoming defensive.
  • The first draft also includes short, choppy sentences that make the document difficult to read.  The final copy flows better.
  • A specific example of an improvement is noticed in sentences 21 and 22.  The draft states, “Do a six-month follow-up. Get feedback from supervisors as well as trainees.”  The final states, “ We should do a six-month follow-up of trainees (with feedback from supervisors as well as ex-trainees)…and he then goes on to explain why, making it very clear.
